In “Better Than This,” Caroline Sky’s follow up to her sultry debut “Paint Me Red,” the California native’s powerhouse vocal and deft songwriting demonstrate that she’s hungry to earn her spot among the R&B-pop pantheon. In her sophomore single, Sky laments her tendency to return to an old relationship over a canvas of glittering percussion and a relentless bass groove, all the while effortlessly executing vocal riffs that would make Ariana Grande blush.
Though the 20-year-old singer already has a resume to impress beyond her years, with a stint on Season 12 of The Voice gaining her recognition before she even graduated high school, Sky shows no signs of slowing down. In the years since her appearance on NBC’s top-rated show, Sky has shared the stage with legendary acts like Joan Baez and Carly Simon, sharpening her performance chops all while studying songwriting under the guidance of industry greats from Bob Weir to Bonnie Hayes.
For this track, Sky teams up with seasoned producer Sebastian Sartor to deliver a record that’s as polished as it is catchy. Sartor’s meticulous arrangements and surgical production skills have earned him credits on records alongside names like Pusha T, Kanye West, and Frank Leone, and his inclusion on this project imbues the track with a vibrant groove that would be right at home on Top 40 radio.
